About Nutrioso Arizona

The mountain hamlet of Nutrioso, Arizona is know for it's expansive views of the surrounding mountains and its elk herds numbering in the hundreds. This quiet community is located midway between Springerville, AZ and Alpine, AZ on US Highway 191 (formerly US 666) referred to as the Coronado Trail.

The most notable geographic feature in Nutrioso is Escudilla Mountain, at an elevation of 10,920' it towers above the eastern skyline and is the third highest mountain in Arizona. However, the beauty of both majestic Noble Mountain along with Gobbler Peak provide for an equally stimulating visual experience. Outdoor activities abound in this remote area with nearby Nelson Reservoir and Hulsey Lake providing stringers full of Apache and Rainbow Trout. The elk hunting in "Unit 1 " is the best in the state....any trip to Nutrioso will yield huge herds of elk roaming down from the mountains into the meadows.

Nutrioso was originally settled in 1875 and rests at an elevation of 7671' at the town post office. However, many of the surrounding mountain neighborhoods are at or above 8000'. The weather in Nutrioso is cool during the summer and the winters are milder than Alpine with less snow. Year around access is generally not an issue.

The name "Nutrioso" is said to come from Coronado's Expedition searching for the Seven Cities of Gold. Upon entering the area the conquistadors saw a beaver "nutria" and a bear "oso" hence the name "Nutria - y - Oso" !! There are other explanations for the town name, but generally this play on words is the most widely held.

If you ever find yourself in Nutrioso on the last Saturday in July, be sure to stop in for the Nutrioso BBQ, located at the Nutrioso Community Center - now in it's 26th consecutive year !!
